Abstract

Environmental concerns have become an important subject within contemporary visual art. Climate change, pollution, deforestation, biodiversity loss, resource extraction, and changing relationships between humans and nonhuman environments have encouraged artists to reconsider the boundaries between art, ecology, science, and activism. Environmental art has developed from earlier land-based practices into a broad field involving installation, sculpture, photography, performance, community projects, digital media, and ecological restoration. This paper examines the relationship between contemporary art and environmental thought. It discusses how artists represent ecological crisis, transform natural materials into artistic media, and encourage audiences to reconsider their relationship with the environment. The paper argues that environmental art can contribute to ecological awareness not simply by presenting environmental problems but by creating alternative ways of experiencing place, materiality, interdependence, and responsibility.
